Leisure Hours (1863). Philip Hermogenes Calderon (English, 1833-1898). Oil on canvas.
Calderon became a leading member of the St John’s Wood Clique, a group of artists interested in modern genre and historical subjects who were inspired, both artistically and socially by the Pre-Raphaelites. Many of his pieces show female forms wearing rich, silky clothing in gently colored landscapes or, in the case of this lady, she has viewing of the landscape as one of her leisure time activities.

My local rescue has a program called Book Buddies where kids read to sheltered cats to keep them from being lonely.
bobsytherabbit asked me to do this and because it’s, y’know, books, I could not say no. It was a pleasure to do.
Rules: In a text post, list 10 books that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard - they don’t have to be the “right” or “great” works, just the ones that have touched you. Tag 10 friends, including me, so I won’t miss your post and send each one an ask with a link to your post.
Here are my book loves:
The Helen Simpson is a short story writer and is the best in the world. The Tiger who Came to Tea and the Song of Achilles make/made me cry like a baby. I’ve never been more shocked and angry than I was when I read the wonderful Mister Pip. The Queer as Folk would be my desert island companion. ;) Neverwhere is my current read but it’s sooooo good I feel I may be reading a whole lot more Neil Gaiman.
